Dance Costumes

Dance costumes need to both enhance the beauty of the dancer’s movement and provide the dancer with comfort and a full range of motion during their performance. The costume, though not as important as the dancer or the choreography, plays a key role in the performance. Can you imagine the reaction of a ballet audience if the opening ensemble came out in jeans?

Picking out the perfect dance costumes can be a difficult process. In most cases you must keep in mind the budget, the performance, each movement of the dance routine, the body type of each dancer and who to go to get them made or who to buy them from. The most important thing to consider is the dancers’ ability to move well in the costume.

When deciding on a budget for the dance costumes, remember that you get what you pay for, but also keep in mind that (especially with younger kids) dancers and dancers’ parents won’t want to pay a premium price if they have to buy their own costume. As you reflect on the different moves in the routine, be sure that no part of the costume could get caught or fly off during the routine. It’s best to keep the costume as simple as possible.

The possible disasters of a badly chosen costume include pants splitting, skirts not being full enough to allow full leg movement, and even on-stage injuries. No matter how beautiful dance costumes are, remember that the most important thing is that it is comfortable to dance in.
